What is Kita-Kon?
Kita-Kon roughly translates to Northern Convention. We are an annual anime convention that takes place in Thunder Bay, ON, Canada.
Our goal is to promote the anime medium, and to unite anime fans in Northern Ontario and beyond. We will accomplish this goal by providing a safe and fun environment for our attendees, with interesting panels, challenging game-shows, and extraordinary guests.
What is Anime?
Anime is a term that describes animation that originates in Japan, though, unlike the cartoons that you might have seen growing up; anime is a genre that caters to the young and the old. You might have seen your children watching Pokemon, Beyblade, Naruto, or Yu-gi-oh on television, or you might have seen Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, or Spirited Away in theaters. Though these are the shows you might have seen, anime is not only aimed at children, some of the most acclaimed action and sci-fi movies are anime titles, a short list would include; Ghost in the Shell, Macross, Samurai 7 and Death Note. Many anime titles have also been inspirational to Hollywood Directors.
Other terms you might see
Cosplay — A combination of costume and play, is a performance art where participants dress up as their favorite character. Generally, these characters are from Japanese anime and manga, but cosplaying is not limited to just those characters.
Manga — Is a Japanese word that means comic. Manga comes in a wide range or genres and styles for any age group.
Panels — Are volunteer run discussions, presentations, or workshops, designed to involve the audience as much as possible. Panel topics could range from a discussion of your favorite show to a demonstration on creating your own costume.
